Mailbox Home Security – Is Your Mailbox Secure From Identity Thieves?

Your mailbox may be the most vulnerable property you own. It contains personal data, credit offers and applications, and a world of personal information you do NOT want others to have. Your mail can include gifts and mail-order or online purchases.

Home mailboxes are easy to break into and rob. They’re a perfect target for identity thieves. Every day, you receive a stack of mail offering opportunities to unscrupulous strangers and even trusted neighbors. Though a variety of “secure” mailbox designs have been available for decades, none of them has proven effective at preventing theft. They simply do not protect us as they should.

Modern communications and technology have made stealing mail a profitable activity. Few crimes create as much stress and heartache as identity theft, and few crimes are as difficult to prevent and detect. A good home mailbox that prevents easy break-in buys extra time and makes it more likely that potential thieves will be caught in the act.

Few homeowners consider their mailbox when they install a security system. Yet, many people have become victims of credit card fraud and identity theft. Remember that an identity thief needs only one piece of mail with personal information to destroy your credit rating and make your life miserable.

It’s time to include your mailbox in your security plan. Here are a few tips that will help you protect the valuable information your mailbox may contain.

* Pick up your mail as soon as it’s delivered. Don’t let mail sit idle in your mailbox, inviting thieves to make off with your personal information.

* Seek alternatives if you can’t empty your mailbox frequently. If you travel a lot or find it difficult to get to the mailbox, consider renting a mailbox at the local post office or from a private mailing shop. This keeps your mail secure until you can get it. It’s inexpensive and well worth the cost and trouble.

* Be sure to stop mail delivery when you are out of town. Like newspapers stacked on the porch, uncollected mail is a sure sign that you’ll not be there to catch a thief. If you’re away from home for more than a day or two, let the post office know not to deliver to you. For short-term absences, ask a friend or neighbor to pick up your mail for you.

* Consider replacing your mailbox with a sturdy, well-constructed alternative. Choose a mailbox made from solid steel with a combination or electronic lock. If you think a steel mailbox will be too unattractive, you can buy or build an attractive container to keep your front yard appealing and secure your mail at the same time. Be sure to maintain your mailbox to keep it free of rust. Steel mailboxes are available at hardware stores and on the internet.

* Make sure to repair your mailbox immediately if you discover any sign that someone has tampered with it. If you witness the tampering, report it to the local postmaster. Tampering with mail is a serious offense that will not be ignored.

There are a few things you should look for when purchasing a new secure locking mailbox:
- durable and weatherproof construction and materials
- easy to install and maintain
- unique individual keys or combinations
- tamper-proof construction
- appropriate size
- approved by the Post Office
- easy-to-access mail retrieval door
- welded, not riveted

You may keep your home and property safe and secure with a super-deluxe home security system, but an insecure mailbox can create financial problems that are even harder to repair than a broken window. Home mailboxes are a prime target for identity thieves, and a little caution on your part will save you years of heartache and bad credit.

Cluster Mailboxes

Cluster Mailbox Units

Cluster mailboxes can be used for various commercial and residential options. USPS cluster mailboxes allow residents of apartments or large office buildings to have mail delivered using the United States Postal Service. Cluster mailboxes are available in different sizes in order to accommodate those that will be using it. There are multiple color options you can choose from in order to have the mailbox stand out or for it to blend in with its natural surroundings.

Apartment Use

Apartment mailboxes will often use the cluster box units as it is a great way to have mail delivered to numerous tenants without taking up much space. They can also be conveniently located in an area of your choice by mounting them on the optional pedestals or alternative base. Commercial mailboxes can be continently located on a sidewalk that tenants or homeowners pass on their way home. Cluster mailboxes are a safer option than individual mailboxes as they don’t require you to step into the street to get your mail.

Secure Mail Delivery

Cluster box units include locking compartments so each person can have their own key to their designated compartment. So, while the mailbox may be shared with others, you can still have your mail safely delivered and stored until you decide to pick it up. Locking mailboxes reduce the risk of identity theft by protecting your private information in a unit that only you have a key for. Outgoing mail is also secure and lets you deliver mail without a trip to the post office. If you go out of town a lot, you may worry about having to set up a hold on your or waste time determining who you trust to pick up your mail while you’re gone. Cluster mailboxes can hold several days’ worth of mail that is safely kept in a locked mailbox.

Environmentally Friendly Mailboxes

Commercial mailboxes, including cluster box units, even help the environment. Since more mail is delivered in one unit instead of to individual mailboxes, less fuel is used with USPS vehicles by having fewer stops to make. Cluster mailboxes also create a more uniformed look in neighborhoods and take up less space. Homeowners in a new neighborhood enjoy the benefits of having cluster box units around their neighborhood. With the units installed during the construction of new homes, homeowners will automatically have their mailbox activated when they move in.

Configuration Options

Different configurations of the cluster box allow you to decide which one meets your specific requirements. Parcel lockers are included within the unit so you can safely have a packaged delivered by the USPS instead of left in the open on your doorstep. The cluster mailboxes are constructed with a durable powder coat finish in colors including sandstone, black, white, and green. They are very durable and are designed to last for many years. The corrosion resistant cluster box units will fight against the harsh weather conditions it endures.

Commerce or Residential Uses

Large mailboxes, such as cluster box units, provide office buildings, apartment complexes, and neighborhoods with a safe and secure mail delivery method. Instead of individual mailboxes throughout the community, cluster mailboxes can save you money while providing a locked mailbox for residence. With different styles and colors to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect cluster mailbox unit.

We offer a great selection and large inventory of commercial brass cluster mailboxes. They are USPS approved and are of quality construction. You can customize your mailboxes with custom engraving to indentify each mailbox with characters and numerals. In addition, we can offer you very quick shipments.

Many of the applications for our commercial brass cluster mailboxes are for commercial mail centers. They are configured or designed to be front loading or rear loading and come in several compartments. Let’s take a look at the design of these two types.

These cluster brass mailbox units have solid brass die-cast doors which include a five pin cylinder cam lock with two keys, a clear 1/4″ thick glass window and a nameplate to identify the tenant’s name and/or box number. The doors are hinged on brass frames and are attached to the individual compartments with four screws. The mailbox compartments are constructed of 20 gauge steel and powder coated tan. They are designed to stack two high and mount adjacent to each other or between wall studs. Mailbox units have the same outside dimensions. As an added benefit, Rear loading units have applications in Free-Standing Rotary Mail Centers and Free-Standing Roll-A-Bout Mail Centers.

The Rear Loading units can have open backs and hinged locking rear covers are available as an option upon request.

The Front Loading units include solid rear covers with two master commercial locks with two keys to open a door panel that swings on a continuous hinge. All of the openings are usable.

There are a various types of Multiple “Tenant” Mailboxes and Group Mailboxes. There are Cluster Box Units, Spreader Plates and Long Beam Groups (aka Gang Mailboxes).

Cluster box units are in use at shopping centers, apartment complexes and in newer neighborhoods. They are of brass construction with 8, 14, 16 and 30 incoming mailboxes, an outgoing mail compartment, and one or two parcel lockers. Cluster Box Units are strictly controlled by the US Postal Service and they can not be modified in any way. They must be pre-approved by the local Post Office and can only be used in commercial installations.

Powder Coating is painting process that is done by applying an electrical current to the object (the mailbox) and an opposite electrical charge to the paint. This method results in a paint surface that is extraordinarily durable and extremely adherent to the metal. Powder Coated mailboxes are corrosion resistant and can last as long as 100 years.

USPS Approved Brass Mailboxes are usually coated with a clear lacquer to preserve the finish. However, the lacquer will not last indefinitely. After ten or more years the sun and rain will cause the brass to darken. The brass can be polished back to its original luster with a quality brass polish and then it can be re-coated with lacquer.

Question by bratty1: How do you mail something from a mailbox without a flag?

I have recently moved into a house with a mailbox attached beside the door. At all the other places I have lived there has been a mailbox on the curb with a flag to raise when you mail something. I have put something in it for 3 days now and the postal carrier has not taken it. Since the box has no flag how do they know something is in there? How do I mail something from this mailbox?

Mailboxes For Fun

When most people think about mailboxes, they think about very mundane steel containers which serve no other purpose than that of … well … a mailbox. Mailboxes however, actually come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes with many different functions often included in the design of the individual who purchased or built the mailbox.

While in fact most of the mailboxes people purchase are simple steel boxes in the classical mailbox half-oval shape, some mail boxes are very ornate indeed. There is no law that says mailboxes cannot be something more, even much more than just a plain and ordinary mail box. Some of the more ornate versions of mailboxes incorporate such unique features as bird baths, bird houses, sporting events, buildings etc.

One of the most unique mailboxes includes a completely automated system. It notifies the mail-recipient when mail arrives to the mail box and delivers the post, via a system of automated belts and drives, directly to the kitchen table of the mailbox holder. While mailboxes such as these are extremely rare, and usually only found in home made mailboxes, they are not alone in their quest to be something more than just a mailbox.

Some of the more common garden-variety mailboxes include homes for animals. It is not at all uncommon in rural areas to find mail boxes that have been made up and serve other purposes. The birdhouse is the most commonly used variation it seems. Often the mailboxes are simply set on longer poles, but sometimes the owners of the mailboxes go to great length to make their mailboxes stand out. One such birdhouse and mailbox incorporates the local fauna, a bird feeder and also the mailbox all together to form a most-conducive atmosphere for the local wildlife while still providing easy access for the mail delivery.

Another common theme of mailboxes is buildings. Whether the mailbox is shaped like a home, a barn or any other reminder that the mailbox owner enjoys, these are pleasing not only aesthetically, but maintain their primary functions as mailboxes. Perhaps the most common building mailbox is a barn. However, there is no limit to what can be created with a simple mailbox if the owner has a little imagination and ability.

There are actually a few coffee-table books and other interesting collections of memorabilia regarding mailboxes. The designs, the aesthetic appearances and the use of mailboxes need not be limited to the simple and plain mailbox anymore.

Question by Lindsie: Why is a regular mailbox showing up on an apartment lot for the sims 2 apartment life?

Can someone please tell me why on every apartment lot i go on to the mailbox is just a regular mailbox its not the mailbox thats suppose to be there. I can pay my bills with the regular mailbox but i cant pay my rent with the regular mailbox. I need help finding out how to get the right mailbox back.

Best answer:

Answer by wollybutt
The most likely cause for your apartment mailbox not working correctly is a conflict with older expansion pack buyable mailbox from Sim a Little Dream a Lot

Look in your Collections folder for a file called 0x6e870b24.package and in your Downloads folder for a file called SEDD_BuyMailboxBV.package and if you find either one, delete them. They are older versions of a very popular buyable mailbox often included in downloaded lots so you may have them and not even be aware of it, but they do conflict with the new Apartment Life mailbox so they must be removed.

There is a new version of the buyable mailbox already available especially for Apartment Life at http://daydream.etowns.net for those times you accidentally delete your mailbox or download a lot with the mailbox missing. Anytime you experience problems with your mailbox after downloading lots in the future, remember to re-check for the two files mentioned above and make sure you do not have them. The only safe buyable mailbox file to have in Apartment Life is SEDD_ALmailbox.package, note the AL designation.

Question by Greg: mailbox ………….?

if you dont have a mailbox can you get like a rental box thing like at a post office or something?

Best answer:

Answer by Jason
Yes, it’s takes a current residence address and photo ID. you usually pay 6 months at a time. And there are multiple sizes, I’d get one size larger than you expect to use. If you do not have a current address you can pick a very rural road and make one up with a fake number.
